The UAE Cybercrime Department has cracked down after discovering hackers were streaming CCTV feeds from inside houses and company buildings to websites outside the UAE.
Investigations revealed the technicians who had installed the CCTV had not provided the appropriate safety systems.
The homeowners had not placed strong enough security passwords and access onto the accounts, enabling hackers to access the cameras.
“The cybercrime department investigated the matter and arrested some people who had installed the cameras for individuals and companies. They didn’t intend to breach the privacy of people but they were ignorant about their job and lacked experience which helped those sites to hack the cameras.”
Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant to the Dubai Police Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs
The Criminal Investigation Department at Dubai Police contacted the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to block the sites.
