5 Reasons Why Living In The UAE Is A Bit Like Living In The 1990s

Avatar

The UAE is so progressive in some ways, making leaps and bounds in technology, Government policy,

But there are a few things that are a bit surreal and end up being a bit of a flashback to the 80s and 90s.

You can even still buy cassettes at one particular store in Abu Dhabi, yesssss. (Proof below)

So here are some of the daily quirks of living in the UAE…

1. Bank cheques

Apparently paying with pieces of paper is still a thing. It’s the only way you’re able to pay for your rent, and somehow, we have to get our first cheque book as a millennial in 2017.

2. Ace of Base and Spice Girls are on the radio on the reg

Ah the good old days. When music was purer… throw a bit of The Corrs in there for good measure too.

Plus every time you go out, bloody ‘This Is How We Do It’ seems to come on at every single venue.

3. Businesses don’t have websites

The shift into the digital sphere is a little behind with some businesses.

You’ll struggle to find websites on some smaller businesses…or even bigger ones.

4. Rollerblades are still a thing

Just take a mosey down the Dubai Canal, around JLT or at JBR’s The Beach to see people jetting around on rollerblades and having a great old time.

5. Perms are only just finally fading out of fashion

The ladies at the salons love a bit of big hair, and somehow every time your regular hairdresser is off, you end up with a weird huge perm-style ‘do.

But it’s all the quirks that make the UAE the best place in the world to live!
