The Fuel Surcharge For Attendants Might Not Be A Terrible Thing

When ADNOC petrol stations announced a surcharge for having fuel pumped would be implemented, it’s fair to say, people got a bit dramatic.

Many took to social media to voice their feelings – claiming that it was a way of life, and changing it would be difficult to adjust to.

The AED10 surcharge was implemented on July 1, and people have gone a bit gaga.

But it’s not the end of the world.

There are self-serve pumps, and if you don’t want to do it yourself, you will be charged AED10 for someone to do it for you.

But think about it.

Your home country probably doesn’t have fuel attendants – Australia got rid of that luxury long, long ago.

It’s standard to top up your own.

And the ADNOC service means you get a bit more

It’s called ‘premium’ and you don’t just get your fuel pumped up – you also get in-store discounts on things like water, coffee, snacks and drinks.

So it can save you money, if you’re prone to grabbing an Americano on your way to work.

Plus, you have the luxury of choosing – I’m not bothered if I do or don’t pay the surcharge, so I can just choose the shortest line, and I’d happily pay AED10 to jump a long petrol station queue, which I was able to do on the weekend.

Are Dubai residents getting too lazy?

It could be the case – there are many luxuries of living here; the glitz and glam, the valets aplenty, the five-star service, and all the rest.

But have we forgotten that these offerings are luxuries – not a way of life?

I’m guilty of it – I turn my nose up at things I’d never have previously done so, too accustomed to the high life here, and take the little things for granted.

But I do think this surcharge is not the end of the world. If you want the service, pay the AED10 (it’s less than a coffee) and if you don’t – just fill it up yourself.

Easy!
