American reality television star, Kim Kardashian West is making headlines once again with her new product launch of Kimono, which is a body shaping garment.
Kim Kardashian who is known for her KKW beauty cosmetics line which included products such as, contour, makeup palettes and perfumes is now coming out with her body solutionwear. This is now being deemed as culturally appropriating the Japanese tradition as it’s naming under wear after the ancient traditional dress.
A handful of people have called out West on this inappropriate labelling of the brand and have got the hashtag #KimOhNo trending on Twitter. Earlier in the year the reality star had also filed to trademark the terms Kimono, Kimono Intimates, Kimono Body and Kimono world.
This basically means that if Kardashian gains copyrights on the word – then she would have the ability to ban Japanese companies from using the term ‘Kimono’ all through out the US.
The public is voicing their outrage through Instagram and Twitter whilst stating how she had 15 years to create this line yet she couldn’t hire a cultural advisor or research her facts before naming her intimate underwear line after a modest dress which is a powerful part of Japan’s history.
Big Hass who is a FM host based in Saudi has tweeted out about this issue and is urging the conversation around this cultural appropriation to pick up in the MENA region.
The voices of the Twitterverse has been heard once again, where the Mayor of Japan will be in talks with Kardashian over the name of her brand
According to AFP, the mayor of Japan’s Kyoto is reported to be in contacting Kardashian and asking her to reconsider naming her brand after the Japanese heritage wear.
“We’re concerned that a wrong understanding of kimono will spread since Ms. Kardashian is such a powerful influencer.”
Mai Sakai, a Kyoto city official in charge of traditional crafts.
