Unpopular Opinion: I Hate It When It Rains In Dubai

Avatar

People seem to love unstable weather in Dubai.

The grey skies, the minor floods, the hail and the thunder and lightning gives you an excuse to jump onto Instagram and Twitter and share the news… cheers for the weather reports y’all, super helpful.

The rain used to be a novelty, but with cloud-seeding very much a-go (there have been 20 cloud-seeding missions in Dubai so far this year), we’ve now seen a month of rain on-and-off and personally, I’m over it.

“Look everyone, it’s raining!”

Here’s why I hate the rain

Most people who grew up in Dubai think grey skies are beautiful. I grew up in Ireland, so I’ve seen plenty of grey days and plenty of rain and one of the reasons I love Dubai is the near guaranteed sunshine 365 days of the year. Sunshine to me feels like positive energy… how could you be miserable on a sunny day? Grey skies are a mood and I am not here for it.

I’m never prepared.

I don’t own a brolly, and because traffic gets rammed to a standstill I end up walking home in the rain. My shoes are never right (sandals have not been good to me this season), I step in puddles and I always end up soaked.

My balcony furniture, clothes I’m drying, things I’ve left on the balcony (cos, yano, you used to be able to do that in Dubai) get ruined. This brings me back to never being prepared. The flash showers in Dubai are always unexpected.

The roads are scary. This week there were over 200 accidents JUST because of the bad weather in Dubai alone, despite constant reminders from Dubai Police for drivers to abide by the rules of the road.

When it rains, it’s all people talk about. Move on with your lives!

I always happen to clean my car the day BEFORE it rains. I don’t know why this is a thing, it just is.

Dubai for me is an outdoors city where weekends are for exercise, hitting the beaches and parks. This is all free stuff, but you can’t do any of it when it rains.

Rain… I just can’t

Miserable skies, traffic, and dodgy drivers are just some of the reasons I hate bad weather.

This year, I’m looking forward to Dubai Summer

Yes it will be hot, but at least it will be consistent!
