VICE Arabia Just Threw SERIOUS Shade At Anghami And The Twitter Reaction Is FIERCE

Avatar

Spotify became available for download in the UAE this week and it’s the talk of the town.

The international music streaming service, which allows subscribers to download millions of tracks for free, is the world’s largest music streaming subscription service and its arrival in the UAE puts it in direct competition with homegrown music service Anghami, which until now has dominated the MENA market with a reported 60+ million users in the region.

Now, VICE Arabia has thrown SERIOUSSSSS shade at local music service through this tweet:

“Spotify launches in the Middle East tomorrow, finally we’re not under the mercy of the colour purple and we have the freedom to choose. Bye Anghami”

And the reaction is seriously mixed: some reckon this is the best tweet ever, while others reckon this shows serious unprofessionalism from the publisher

‘Shame’

‘Silly tweet’

‘Okay it’s true Anghami is a bit annoying, but not like this captain’

‘What is this vulgar attitude they are both companies providing services, if you don’t like it don’t use it or else criticise in a decent way – I wish this came from an individual not from a company like VICE’

‘Tweet fail’

‘Wow, just to promote myself I have to put down other people – it’s bad, cheap and unprofessional marketing’

’Professionalism = zero’

‘Are you ok with your Arabic counterparts using such low tactics? Doesn’t reflect well on your brand and the replies are very negative’

Some even hit back by throwing shade on VICE content

It’s not all negative, some are delighted there’s another service to choose from

“Yaay, finally I’m not going to use Anghami any more’

And thought the tweet was brilliant

This is the subtle response from Anghami’s co-founder Elie Habib

Anghami is the MENA’s largest music streaming app

Founded in Lebanon in 2012, the service experienced rapid growth, it now boasts over 100 employees and is the preferred music streaming platform for over 60 million people in the Arab world.

Anghami offers a mix of Arabic and international music while Spotify focuses on international music with a reported 191 million users across 18 countries.

Time will tell whether Spotify will grab a chunk of the local music streaming market.
