6 of the best fish and chips in Dubai
Nothing quite hits the spot like a traditional fish and chip supper, and Dubai has its fair share of options to please. From posh restaurant style dishes to low-key (and low budget) choices – here are some of our favourites.
Bob’s Fish and Chips (from Dhs68)
Chances are, you’ll have ended a night or two sat al fresco at Bob’s in Dubai Marina. Thanks to it’s prime location and hearty fare, this is one destination that every single taxi driver in Dubai knows how to get to. With it’s array of chip shop classics on offer – a large cod and chips will set you back Dhs68 – Bob’s is probably the most authentic fish and chip option for Brits missing home. They even serve mushy peas, gravy and curry sauce by the ladle-full. Their delivery service is also the perfect accompaniment to an evening of Netflix. So wrong but oh-so right.
Geales (Dhs140)
In recent years the humble fish supper had a bit of a renaissance, and posh places started serving it as a cheeky main, which continues to hold favour with the paying public.Geales knows how to do posh fish and chips well (Dhs140 for cod or local hammour), with its unique hops batter falling delicately at the touch of a fork, the chips chunky and the peas served mushy. Set in the luxurious beachside Le Royal Meridian, this is the place to dress up and dine out on a British classic.
Rivington Grill (Dhs125)
Having started its life in London’s trendy Shoreditch, Rivington Grill know how to combine both style and substance to great effect. And the traditional fish and chips served here (Dhs125) is no exception. Firstly, the portion is absolutely huge, and the chips are cooked to perfection – salty with fluffy insides and plenty of bite on the outside. The peas are crushed as opposed to mushed – as it the modern way – and the tartar sauce makes for a wonderfully tangy addition. Located in the always popular Souk Al Bahar with view of the Burj Khalifa, this is the ideal place to take friends, family, dates or even just yourself, if you need a bit of comforting after a long, hard day.
London Fish & Chips (Dhs30)
The bargain choice, London Fish & Chips are often to be found in food courts (Ibn Battuta is a good one) throughout the Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Charmingly named after London landmarks, these aren’t the most sophisticated versions of this dish you’ll find, but from just Dhs30 for a meal (including chips and drink) you can’t really complain. Our favourites include the Picadilly (white fish, battered) and the Oxford Street (cajun cod fillets) for an easy mid-shopping snack. Bread Street Kitchen Dhs110
The best of Blighty has come to Atlantis The Palm thanks to the recent opening of Gordon Ramsay’s successful Bread Street Kitchen franchise. Here, it’s more about quality than quantity, as well as thoughtful presentation thanks to the placement of the meal on newspaper. The fish is expertly cooked in a light batter, and served with a stack of chunky chips with fancy minted pea puree, and Gordon’s own ‘chip shop sauce’. At Dhs110 it’s not as casual as some offerings, but not nearly as pricey as others. Given it’s novel location – and with cool, clean interiors – it’s well worth a try.
Slapfish (from Dhs45)
The export from California – as you might have guessed from the name – does fish, and it does it well. The fish and chips on offer here (starting at Dhs45) may not be the greasy type most commonly served by the British seaside, but they are an inexpensive and palette pleasing version nonetheless, especially for a Mall restaurant (Slapfish is located in Ibn Battuta). The fries are skinnier than usual, and you can choose to have the fish grilled or fried (for the health conscious foodies out there). It may not be traditional, but it’s a fresh take on a menu classic that can’t be overlooked. They also deliver, which comes in very handy.
