Seriously, what did we all eat for breakfast before avocado on toast? Once the stuff of ’70s dinner party dreams, the humble avo has quickly become the most Instagrammed breakfast food in the world. For real.
But instead of taking pictures of it, we like to eat it. Here are some of the best places in Dubai to get your fix – just leave the camera in your bag, yeah?
One of Dubai’s original cool-kid cafes, Tom & Serg have built a strong reputation on their impeccable breakfast goods. And in true hipster style, they’ve got plenty of the green stuff. The delightfully retro cottage cheese and avocado on toast is AED49 and you can add smoked salmon for an additional AED15. But, this place is run by Aussies, so of course you can add avo to pretty much anything. For those of you who can’t fathom starting the day without les oueffs, simply get their two eggs served either poached or scrambled on toast for AED27 and add on some avocado (again extras are AED15) to make it unforgettable. Expect to wait for a table on the weekends.
A new addition to Sophie’s menu are the irresistible avocado toasties, which are making us want to ensure we’re at Riva Beach Club in time to make the most of them. Available daily from 7:30am to 1pm there are three different options to choose from: the traditional avocado with crushed tomatoes, onion, chili and coriander (AED30), the quirky avocado with sweetcorn and spring onion (AED32, add poached eggs for AED15) or the ‘make a meal of it’ avocado on toast with sautéed mushrooms, cucumber and smoked salmon (AED52). We’ll take all three. For research purposes, obviously. (Need more breakfast inspo? You’ll love the Six of the best places to get French toast in Dubai)
The avocado on toast (AED40) at Urban Bistro is served in a no frills, maximum flavour way. It comes crushed on multi seed toast, with Sriracha mascarpone and beet chutney to keep it company. This is our favourite way to enjoy it as the three ingredients compliment each other beautifully, but for those that want to amp it up a bit you can add on a poached egg for AED12 and even some tuna tataki, smoked salmon, seared beef or prawns for AED18. With Urban Bistro’s convenient yet pretty waterside location in the heart of Media City, it’s the ideal place for a breakfast meeting, too.
Comptoir 102 have earned themselves quite the reputation as the go-to spot for fresh and healthy fare in this city, and their boho-chic setting just adds to the fantasy that you’re in some kind of hip hangout in laid-back LA. Or is that just us? Unarguably the food blogger’s favourite, Comptoir 102’s avocado crostini (AED65) is comprised of gently toasted bread topped with their home made fluffy macadamia sauce and alfalfa sprouts, guacamole and cucumber slices. It also comes with a decent serving of house salad – who said healthy food wasn’t filling.
The ‘bravocado’ (AED56) at Eggspectation is probably the best kind of eggs Benedict you’ve ever heard of. Why? Because it comes served atop a mini-mountain of sliced avocado, of course. Two eggs, perfectly poached (obvs, they don’t call it Eggspectation for nothing, you know) come with the aforementioned magical green fruit, a lightly spiced tomato salsa, melted parmesan and cheddar cheeses (YUM) and a portion of Lyonaisse style potatoes on the side. If that’s not worth waking up bright and early and queuing down on JBR for, we honestly don’t know what is.
This gimmick-free gourmet cafe in The Galleria on Al Wasl road is one of Dubai’s best kept breakfast spot secrets. And their beef bacon and avocado toasted open sandwich (AED42) is as pretty (and reasonably priced) as it is filling. The avo is served chunky, ripe and sliced, and the seeded bread has bite but is not over-crisped. The topping of salty beef bacon and cheeky little addition of a cherry tomato or two make the whole affair more than a little mouthwatering. Warning: this is too good to share.
