Hummus is one of those things that we’ve all dipped in and out of over the years – quite literally – but living in Dubai we’re lucky enough to have some of the best versions of this delicacy on our doorstep. This classic Middle Eastern dish is the ideal way to punctuate your day with a healthy snack, or warm up your appetite before a mixed grill feast – and here are some of the best servings in the city. Pita breads at the ready…
Masgrouf London is one of the nicest Middle Eastern restaurants in Dubai. Stylish yet relaxed and situatied in Jumeirah 2 – just next to Mercato Mall – it is light, airy and offers some truly delicious food, to boot. The hummus here starts at AED 24, and comes either plain and simple or adorned with tender cubes of meat, and with a generous basket of hot, puffy pita bread to dip.
Al Hamidieh is another foodie failsafe in Dubai, and the hummus here is both rich and refreshing in equal measure. A portion of the plain stuff starts from AED 25, but it’s AED 39 for the delicious version which is topped with meat and pine nuts. With locations in Downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina, it’s also handy for those ambling through their weekends in the usual spots.
A JBR favourite, Simsim has a reputation for reliable service and even more dependable tasty food. Their hummus starts from AED 22, or AED 28 with hot toppings (meat, pine nuts) and comes with a drizzle of olive oil and that all-important fresh bread; as well as sublime beach views. Grab your mates, order a round and try not to fight over who gets last swipe at the bowl. (Attention all hummus-lovers: Dessert Hummus Is Real And Someone Needs To Bring It To The UAE Immediately)
One of the LovinDubai contributors used to live on Mohammed bin Rashid boulevard, and quickly made Al Hallab their home from home. Not only is the restaurant one of the grandest places this side of a five star hotel, their food is more than reasonable and beyond delicious. Their flavour-packed and filling hummus starts at AED 20 and is served with hot and crispy puffed up pitta bread, but be warned: it’s so good that sharing will be tough. They also have other locations in The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and Garhoud.
Wafi Gourmet, as the name suggests, offers all of their food with the care and attention of a haute restaurant. And their hummus is no different: silky, smooth and subtle in flavour – it’s a dip with a different. Prices for their version start from AED 32, and there are three locations in Dubai, at The Dubai Mall, Umm Hurair and Dubai International Airport.
Another family favourite,Leila’s Restaurant have locations in Downtown Dubai, Arabian Ranches, Mirdif and IMPZ (International Media Production Zone – near Jumeirah Village Triange). Always busy with regulars, we’re not sure how many servings of hummus they get through a day – but we’d estimate it’s a lot. Prices for the classic start at just AED 17, and range to AED 28 with the addition of meat and pine nuts. Get involved. (Popping down to the supermarket?
