This traditional Middle Eastern dish a hearty, and healthy,
way to start the day. Quite simply, it’s a bubbling pan of tomato and egg
goodness with some kind of bread on the side, which can either be served spicy
or with a twist. Trust us, once you try it, you won’t be able to get enough.
Here are some of the best versions in Dubai right now.
The shakshuka at the Pavilion Cafe on the boulevard,
Downtown, is often voted as one of the best in Dubai. With roasted red peppers,
tomatoes, hummus, labneh and cucumber all going into their saucy cauldron, and heaps
of bread on the side to scoop it up with, it’s a taste explosion, and all for a
reasonable AEDÂ 50.
The unique green shakshuka (AEDÂ 80) at Baker & Spice is
made for two to share, and comes comprised of four eggs baked in a kousa and
melted onion salsa with fresh spinach, turmeric, chilli flakes and olive oil.
Not for the faint hearted, this certainly boasts an early morning
kick-and-a-half. Served with crusty farmhouse bread, you’ll be mopping up every
last drop. Find them in the Marina, Jumeirah 1 and Souk al Bahar.
Situated down in Jumeirah Harbour, a relaxed breakfast at
healthy spot Omnia Gourmet is a blissful way to start the day. Their shakshuka
comes with eggs cooked in a medley of roasted red peppers, cherry tomatoes and
chili (AEDÂ 49) you can also also add crumbed feta cheese for AEDÂ 5. Why not make
a day of it while you’re down there, and take a stroll around the creek to walk
off such a big brekkie?
Karak House on Emaar boulevard is an incredibly popular
Indian-meets-Middle Eastern fusion cafe, which boasts a mean shakshuka (AEDÂ 45)
as their hero dish. Served in a boiling hot pan, you’ll find baked eggs sitting
alongside braised beef, with a smoked aubergine and tomato sauce. Generously
accompanied with a large portion hot pita bread, you’ll need a breather before
you’ll be able to tackle Dubai Mall.
The Pantry Cafe is a failsafe breakfast spot, and their
fiery shakshuka (AEDÂ 50) is definitely a menu highlight. For your money, you get
spicy tomato sauce, poached eggs, jalapeños and a side of pita bread, with feta
generously crumbled on top to mellow the heat a bit. If you fancy amping it up,
you can add meatballs to replace the feta for AEDÂ 13. Find them Al Safa and Business
Bay.
The Cocoa Room in Al Wasl’s The Galleria mall knows what
they’re doing when it comes to AM cuisine. Despite only opening in September of
last year, they’ve quickly earned a strong reputation for their delicious baked
shakshuka (AEDÂ 40), which comes green. Don’t be alarmed, this just means it has
spinach substituted for the tomato – which makes it even better for you!
Wonderfully salty, creamy and flavoursome, you’ll be ordering extra crusty
bread to make the experience last as long as possible.
