Smuggling a AED73.4M diamond inside a shoe across countries?! Sounds like something straight out of a movie!
Well it’s actually not.. 3 expats were caught trying to smuggle a diamond worth $20M from a money transport company despite avoiding surveillance cameras.
Three expatriates have been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing a diamond worth $20 million from a money transport company in May of 2018.
According to Gulf News, Dubai Police was alerted about a robbery of a rare stone (9.33 carat) after an unknown person broke through three security gates to get to the company’s vault on May 25th 2018. Investigation records reveal one of the convicts, an employee at the money transport company, had planned to steal the diamond from the company safe with the help of two colleagues.
The expats who were caught at Dubai International Airport were sentenced to 3 years in prison and ordered to pay the value of the stolen diamond.
According to sources, on the day of the heist, the three expats entered the company using duplicated keys and stole the diamond whilst avoiding surveillance cameras located in the safe to remain anonymous.
