A Traveler Shares His Daily Journey To Dubai From The Netherlands Without A Plane

For so many of us, especially now that travel is somewhat back in our lives, our dream destination is a quick flight away. But for one frequent traveller, he planned to make his journey memorable and sustainable!

That’s right, Wiebe Wakker aka @plugmeintravel is travelling from the Netherlands to Dubai and isn’t using a plane

Traveller Wiebe Wakker planned his sustainable journey a month in advance but he had to make some quick changes

He revealed his plan on December 8, 2021, and only kick-started the journey 6 days ago! Wakker stated that he was travelling to the UAE to speak about his ‘Sustainable Adventure’ at Expo 2020 Dubai and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, so taking a plane seemed kinda contradictory. “Also I want to make a statement that if we want to save the climate, we need to make radical choices,” he shared on his Instagram post.

And of course like any other traveller, he faced some obstacles. He was planning to pass through 9 countries by train, bus and ferry but Iran wasn’t permitting visas due to the Omicron variant being so widely spread in the region.

“I still could travel by train to Turkey and fly to Dubai from there. Or fly straight from Amsterdam. I’m not sure. Maybe travelling right now is not the right thing to do, loads of uncertainties,” he wrote. It seemed impossible at this point but he turned it around!

The sustainable traveller went from Amsterdam to Vienna, to Bucharest, and now is in Istanbul… and then he got some bad news

Iran was still closed by the time he reached Turkey so he decided to take a much needed, 2 day rest in Istanbul and Ankara. And that’s when he got the news: “the event at the Netherlands Pavillion at the Expo has been cancelled.” He of course contemplated carrying on the journey or to go back home. His decision was relatively easy because everyone on his socials was cheering him on!

Iran had stated they’re closing their borders for 15 days but even on the 16th day, “Iran remains closed for tourists,” he wrote. Time for plan B! He decided to return to Turkey, taking an 18-hour bus ride.

Although there have been MANY obstacles, our sustainable traveller is continuing the journey
