100 Afghan Women Invited By Emirati Businessman To Dubai On Scholarships Were Denied By Taliban At The Very Last Minute

On December 22, the Taliban government in Afghanistan announced that women are banned from accessing higher education in universities. This news broke the hopes and dreams of several Afghan women.

Emirati Businessman Khalaf Al Habtoor, together with several UAE authorities had announced a fully funded scholarship opportunity for 100 Afghan women to complete their education in Dubai universities.

The announcement was made in December last year, and by August 23, 2023- all preparations had been made. Dubai was ready to welcome all 100 female students.

This morning the Taliban government was not allowing the women to depart despite having a valid visa, ticket and a mahram (male guardian)

The students sent voice notes to Mr Habtoor asking for guidance on what to do next.

Extremely disappointed by the turn of events, Khalaf Al Habtoor took to X to share his anger. In the video, he is also reaching out to the international community and the Taliban government to interfere and help the women come to Dubai.

This stands as a profound tragedy, a blow against the principles of humanity, education, equality, and justice. I request all involved parties to quickly step in and help rescue and assist these struggling students.
