An Ethiopian Housekeeper Trusted The UAE And Her Employer For Her Stage 3 Breast Cancer Treatment

Aynalem, a 45-year-old Ethiopian housekeeper working in the UAE, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in October 2021.

She chose to stay in the UAE for treatment, understanding that returning to Ethiopia would mean little chance of receiving the necessary medical care.

Aynalem underwent six rounds of chemotherapy and targeted therapy, which took a toll on her health, affecting her energy, skin, and appetite. The most challenging part of her treatment was losing her hair.

Despite these hardships, she bravely continued her treatment and completed her final round in March 2022.

Fortunately, Aynalem’s employers were all set to go through this difficult journey with her…100% support!

Following chemotherapy, Aynalem underwent a full mastectomy, requiring checkups every three days for some time

She was not made to work during this time- and was receiving full support from her employer.

They not only assisted with the expenses of her treatment but also provided logistical support for her medical appointments and followed her diet and treatment plan in detail.

Despite her family being far away, the team ensured Aynalem always had someone to support her or confide in. She says,

“I am very grateful to the people around me and Housekeeping Co, they gave me strength and full
support. They helped with everything and saved my job.”

In September 2022, doctors gave Aynalem the incredible news that she was fit to work again

She remains a part of Housekeeping Co as their company housekeeper, continuing to support her family back in her hometown of Addis Ababa. Her health is closely monitored by professionals, with checkups every three months.

This level of care would not have been possible if she had left the UAE when diagnosed.

Speaking about Aynalem’s journey, Housekeeping Co’s Training Vice Principal, Ariel Mar Tun, said:

“All our staff love Aynalem, as she has carried herself with dignity and grace and never complained. She has been a great team member ever since she joined us. She is very attentive to all staff requests and brings positive energy to work, which we all admire.”

Aynalem has encouraged other domestic workers to ensure they check for any abnormalities and urged women to get their symptoms examined as early as possible.

She continues to emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment.
