Customs officials probably weren’t expecting a diamond seizure to the tune of AED6.6million when they stumbled upon some questionable tea leaves in Mumbai this week.

An Indian man flying from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Dubai was found to have a significant number of diamonds in amongst his luggage. On August 9, officers of Mumbai Air Customs seized 1559.6 Carat of natural and lab-grown diamonds from the traveler after the sought-after jewels were found to be contained in plastic packaging concealed by loose tea.

Posted by the official Mumbai Customs Twitter account, the post noted, the diamonds were ‘ were ingeniously concealed inside a tea packet’

Since the disclosure, the man has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
