Dubai Customs Foils AED6.2 Million Drug Smuggling In An Air Cargo

Dubai Customs authorities have successfully thwarted a major drug smuggling attempt at Dubai International Airport, seizing narcotics valued at AED 6.2 million hidden within an air cargo shipment. The operation, a testament to the agency’s vigilance and commitment to maintaining the security of its borders, resulted into the handover of the goods & individuals to the General Department of Narcotics Control at the Dubai Police General Headquarters.

The Dubai Customs Intelligence Department’s specialized team became suspicious of two shipments from an Asian country, leading to the unfolding of the operation

According to WAM, through their thorough examination, they discovered that the initial shipment, consisting of 20 parcels, was hiding 460 kilograms of narcotics and restricted pharmaceuticals, with an estimated market value of around AED 1 million.

And the second shipment was even heftier…

In the case of the second shipment, which comprised 22 parcels, it was found to contain 520kg of Tramadol, equivalent to a remarkable 175,300 tablets, valued at roughly Dh5.25 million in the market. Subsequently, the confiscated items and the individuals implicated were transferred to the Dubai Police’s General Directorate of Anti-Narcotics, following strict legal procedures and protocols.

Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, Director-General of Dubai Customs, CEO of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, stated:

Dubai Customs has set a pivotal goal in its 2021-2026 strategy — to lead globally in safe customs practices, achieved through our dedicated workforce and specialised systems. Our mission is to enhance security measures and protect both our society and economy. Their vigilant actions not only prevent the smuggling of narcotics but also safeguard the health, economy, and social fabric of the community, whether these illicit substances are destined for the local market or any other country through Dubai.

Similarly, last week, the UAE authorities thwarted an attempt to smuggle AED3 billion worth of drugs

Following a tip-off regarding a substantial narcotics smuggling operation, local authorities initiated “Operation Storm” and swiftly launched an investigation into five shipping containers. To their surprise, the drugs were cleverly hidden within 651 doors and 432 decorative bars.

Further, authorities arrested 6 members of an international drug ring in connection with the world’s biggest Captagon drug operation!

What are the drugs penalties in the UAE?

Engaging in illegal drug-related activities, including importing, exporting, possessing, producing, or dealing with illegal drugs, constitutes a federal crime in the UAE. The nation strictly enforces a zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking, with offenders facing severe consequences such as imprisonment, substantial fines, and deportation.
