The Ministry of Climate Change & Environment in the UAE shared a few posts across its social media platforms about “the UAE National Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plan.”

It’s a document detailing the country’s efforts in preserving local biodiversity and regulating and mitigating the impact of invasive species on the environment.

The posts are flooded with negative comments stating that the methods listed in the document are inhumane

Animal rights activists in the UAE and local rescue groups and organisations have spread images of this document

A few people even sent the images of the document to Lovin Dubai to spread the word in hopes to make a change.

People were appalled at the methods of eradication and control of rodents, cats, and feral dogs

But what looked like something so cruel… turned out to be a jump to conclusion

If you look at the document The UAE National Invasive Species Strategy & Action Plan 2022 – 2026, specifically on page 12/25 (if you open as a PDF) it has two different sections with similar titles.

One title reads “1.6.1 Management of IAS in the UAE,” and across from that page reads another title “1.6.2 Management of IAS in the world.”

What people have been reading as the methods used in the UAE for eradication and control, is actually under “1.6.2 Management of IAS in the world”

Many saw the document, read the horrific actions listed and believed this is what the UAE is doing when in all actuality, they were just reading the wrong side of the page.

If you look under “1.6.1 Management of IAS in the UAE”, here is how the UAE deals with the eradication and control of cats: TNR, check for a microchip, and diseased cats go through mercy euthanasia, and to control, they offer shelters. As for dogs, they are sterilised, chipped and put up for adoption. Frenzied dogs go through mercy euthanasia and to control, they offer shelters.

Lovin Dubai reached out to the Ministry of Climate Change & Environment in the UAE which confirmed that people were reading the wrong section, thinking it was the UAE’s methods
