Today, Wednesday, 19 July 2023 marked the first day of Muharram, the first out of the 12 months of the Hijri calendar which has now entered the year 1445

The UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court, all sent congratulatory messages to leaders, kings, presidents and emirs of the Arab world to mark the new Islamic year.

The royals wished everyone “good health and happiness, further progress and prosperity for their peoples and dignity and glory for Arab and Islamic nations”, as reported by WAM.

The Burj Khalifa lit up in a light show to mark the Hijri new year and Friday, 21 July 2023 has been declared a public holiday in the UAE for the occasion.

What is Hijri, the Islamic New Year, and how is it calculated?

The beginning of the first Hijri year was marked by the migration of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) from the city of Makkah to Madinah in the year 622 AD. The Arabic word Hijri itself translates to migrate or to depart.

The migration of the Prophet (PBUH) was a formative moment after which a state based on Islamic teachings was formed and Islam flourished as a major world religion.

Although the occasion does not hold religious significance and is not recommended as a day of celebration like Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, it is considered as a modern-day holiday and widely celebrated.
