A Bloomberg report citing unnamed sources recently stated that Emirates was seeking to take over Etihad to create the world’s largest carrier.
And now UAE based airlines Emirates and Etihad have strictly dismissed the report.
“There is no truth to this rumour,” an Emirates spokeswoman said, whereas a spokesperson from Etihad commented, “Etihad Airways denies any plans for an Emirates takeover.”
Emirates is owned by the Government of Dubai while Etihad is controlled by the government of neighbouring Emirate and capital Abu Dhabi.
Rumours of the two airlines merging have floated around even in the past. First during the financial crisis of 2008 and just recently over the last year.
What is clear from recent news reports is that both airlines have faced pressures because of the tough competition and unstable business environment for carriers.
