Emirates has announced it will be building the biggest vertical farming facility in the WORLD and it’s going to be in Dubai (of course).

The group’s catering facility is working with a US-based company, Crop One Holdings, INC. and the companies will build the massive facility near Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central.

The farms will grow produce to use for catering aboard Emirates flights, and use 99% less water than standard farming methods.

The farming will help reduce carbon emissions, thanks to a drop in transportation costs and requirements.

Some stats about the farm:

• 130,000sqf in size
• The production output will be equivalent to 900 acres of farmland
• It will harvest 2,700kg of leafy greens per day
• It uses 99% less water than standard farming

Construction will begin in November this year, and will take about one year to finish – with produce inflight by December 2019.
