A 61-year-old man has been detained in the UAE for importing six months worth of anti-depressants.

The man, Perry Coppins was reportedly transiting through Fujairah port when customs officers found three varieties of prescription medication in the man’s luggage.

Under UAE law, travellers are allowed to bring up to 30 days worth of medication into the country with a valid prescription. Coppins reportedly did have a prescription for the medication but also had approximately six months worth of pills – which is prohibited under The Pharmacy Federal Law No 4 of 1983 and Narcotic Law 14 of 1995.

The UAE’s Ministry of Health guidelines can be viewed here.

The British national reportedly needs the three varieties of medication – named as temazepam, clonazepam and citalopram by international press

Coppins works as a maritime security officer.

His trial commences on January 15.
