A couple who had sex outside marriage and intimate photos of them were posted online have been jailed for one year.
The Appeal Court had ruled out a jail term and just fined the defendants, however the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi has found them both guilty, according to the Khaleej Times.
The unmarried pair were said to have been alone in a private place together, an act that goes against Sharia Law.
The Arab man shared the images to his friends on social networking sites, according to reports, violating information technology laws.
The couple were originally jailed for one year, but this was reduced to one month by the Appeal Court, who cancelled the jail sentence and handed out AED10,000 fines following another appeal.
However, the Supreme Court upheld the original ruling; the couple violated the UAE Penal Law, Section 5, Article 312, Paragraph 3 ‘”Crimes that affect religious beliefs and practices” – unmarried men and women who are unrelated should not be alone together.
They have both now been sentenced to a year in jail and the man has been given an AED250,000 fine.
