An Emirati man has been sentenced to 10 years in jail, and an AED1 million fine for defaming the UAE.
The man reportedly used social media sites including Facebook and Twitter to defame the UAE in ‘publishing false information, rumours and lies’ to promote sectarian feelings and hatred that would damage the harmony and unity of the UAE.
According to Gulf News, the man was previously sentenced to three years in jail for insulting the UAE’s leaders, contacting international political organisations and providing false reports and information about the UAE – but was pardoned by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nayhan, President of the UAE.
After the man was pardoned and released, he continued to use social networking sites to defame UAE leaders, and was charged, and his devices confiscated.
