Plans for Al Maktoum International Airport (or Dubai World Central), pipped as eventually becoming the world’s largest airport, are currently being reviewed.
Officials are reviewing the long-term master plan, taking into consideration consumer trends and preferences as well as ensuring the infrastructure takes full advantage of emerging technologies and optimises investment to grow its already significant contributions to Dubai’s economy, according to a statement.
The estimated cost of the airport is over AED100 million.

Part of the airport is already in operation, DWC serves as a major cargo-transport hub and welcomed over one million passengers in the first of 2019, up 141.1% year on year, as it alleviated stress from DXB amid 45-day runway repairs.
DWC is currently served by 11 passenger airlines operating an average of 500 weekly flights to 31 international destinations. It is also home to 18 cargo operators that fly to as many as 45 cities around the world.
The exact timeline for completion has yet to be finalised, according to reports.
