A opportunist debt-collector, who seized a Jaguar that had been deserted in Dubai, has been found-out by Dubai Police.
The seemingly clever ruse happened when the car’s owner absconded in 2017 after failing to pay a car loan.
Following repeated efforts by the debt collection company to contact the man, who had fled to India, a man working for the debt collection company in charge of retrieving the car discovered the keys were in Dubai, so he ‘repossessed the car’ but kept it for himself, according to a report in Gulf News.
The man kept the car, a Jaguar worth AED193,000, before taking leave in Syria, according to his brother. However when his brother was contacted, he cooperated with Dubai Police and gave them the location of the car.
The suspect failed to appear at his first court hearing on Sunday and is allegedly still in Syria.
During the hearing it was confirmed that a tow truck had been sent to ‘repossess’ the vehicle, but it had never been delivered to authorities.
