Backstory

An Arab resident borrowed money from his friend multiple times while promising to return it at some point. He reassured his buddy over WhatsApp texts that he’d return the cash, while even promising some extra compensation for the delays he caused.

Except… he never paid back. To make matters worse he ignored his calls and even skipped out on court proceedings. And surely enough, the Dubai Courts wasn’t having it.

They reviewed the WhatsApp messages and ruled against the resident for never repaying the money.

The verdict?

The resident now has to cough up:

  • AED 480,000 (the full amount)
  • 5% annual interest from the date of the claim till the date of settlement
  • All court fees and expenses

Ouch.

The big takeaway?

The Dubai Courts sent a loud and clear message. Whether on WhatsApp or IRL, law stands with those who’ve been wronged. So if you think a text message doesn’t hold ground in the court, think again.

Dubai’s judiciary holds a firm stance on personal debts, and any kind of digital communications such as whatsapp messages also hold evidentiary value under civil law.
