Some Dubai Schools Are Locking Away Phones To Keep Students Focused

It’s 2025… and let’s be honest, everyone’s glued to their screens.

Attention spans are shorter than ever, and social media has taken over daily life. For students, that means focusing in class has become tougher than acing a surprise test. To fix that, some Dubai schools are stepping in with a bold move: locking away phones during the school day.

Where it’s happening

At Emirates International School – Jumeirah, high school students now hand in their phones each morning and pick them up only after the school day ends. No mid-day scrolling, no quick TikTok checks… just uninterrupted focus.

Why they’re doing it

The move is backed by global research that shows how limiting phone use can:

  • Support student mental health
  • Encourage real-world interaction
  • Improve academic focus

Moreover, the school said, “We’re not banning technology—just setting the stage for better habits.”

On the plus side…

  • Students are more focused in class
  • Distractions from social media and games are cut out
  • Face-to-face conversations get a boost

On the flip side…

  • It limits access to useful educational apps
  • Some students feel disconnected from family during the day
  • It can be tricky if an emergency comes up

What people are saying

When Lovin Dubai asked on WhatsApp if phones should be locked away during school, most people agreed. It helps students stay focused and present. But still, the debate is open: is this the start of healthier habits or a step too far?
