A 53 year old Emirati woman has been fined AED 500,000 for comments she allegedly messaged to her uncle using the messaging service, Whatsapp.

The Dubai courts have charged the woman under new UAE hate crime laws for using hateful and insulting language in a message exchange with her uncle, 60. She is also being charged with insulting a historic Muslim scholar,Yazid Bin Muawiya who lived 1,400 years ago, in what is believed to be the first sentence handed down under new hate crime laws.

The WhatsApp exchange with her uncle began in November 2015 and ended in January last. The woman, who has admitted to the charges, claims that she has financially supported her uncle for 29 years but that after she was diagnosed with cancer, he abandoned her.

It has been reported that the woman allegedly called her uncle “tyrannous, wicked and a forger” in the messages.

Those in breach of the hate crime laws can be sentenced to up to five years in prison and be issued a fine of up to AED 1 milion.

“He didn’t see or look after me, And now he is fighting me over a will. He deserved what I said to him. A person who sends his niece to court is not a man.”
