A full report into the death of a British worker who died at a World Cup stadium construction site in Qatar in January 2017 has been revealed.
Zac Cox, a 40-year-old man from the UK fell almost 40metres to his death when the rigging he was on collapsed, in a ‘downright dangerous’ working environment, according to a British coroner’s report.
Equipment which was hoisting the platform failed, causing the area Cox and another colleague were working to also collapse. The coroner announced it was the failings of the managers who should have been aware the workers were relying “on potentially lethal equipment.â
British coroner Veronica Hamilton-Deeley said on Tuesday, that the equipment used was simply not up to safety standards.
The catwalk from which the men were working was allegedly installed in a chaotic and unprofessional way and a decision, made to speed up the build of the roof of the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, to user lever hoists “worthy of the rubbish bin’ were a ‘perfect storm of events’ which lead to Cox’s death.
Investigations into the death are still underway by local Qatari authorities.
