The UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Gargash has released a statement regarding the case of a British man detained in the UAE for five months on ‘spying’ charges.
Matthew Hedges, a PhD student was detained after reportedly seeking out sensitive and confidential information about the UAE.
Further details have yet to be released by the court and Gargash released this statement addressing the matter, stating UK authorities were reluctant to address the matter through ‘common channels’.
Case of Mathew Hedges extensively discussed with UK colleagues over last 5 months. Unusual & embarrassing revelations about friends & allies. With reluctance of UK authorities to address matter thru common channels, due legal process needs to take its course.

Extremely concerned about case of Matthew Hedges in UAE. Have raised twice with Foreign Minister and stressed the need for regular consular access, fair & humane treatment as well as due process which is essential.
