Here’s What To Do If You Receive An Alert While At Work

You’re at your desk, typing away, maybe half-looking at your emails, when suddenly your phone or computer buzzes with an emergency alert. That “Oh no” moment is totally normal, but the key is knowing what to do next.

Thankfully, the UAE has it covered.

The Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre (adcmc_ae) recently shared simple steps under their Our Community Is Prepared campaign to help everyone stay safe while at work

Stop, breathe, and remember to stay calm

First thing: don’t panic. Stop working immediately and take a breather. Alerts are designed to give you time to react safely, so remaining calm is half the battle.

Avoid rushing around, a composed response keeps you and those around you safe.

Keep away from danger zones

Windows, glass walls are a risky element. Move away from any areas where glass could cause damage or debris could fall.

If your building has a basement, that’s the way to go. Head there using the stairs ONLY.

Follow official instructions

Once you’re in a safe spot, wait for the official notification confirming the emergency is over before resuming work and normal activities. Authorities will communicate clearly when it’s safe to move, so no guessing needed.

Remember: staying put at a safe zone is the safest thing you can do during an emergency.

Staying informed matters

UAE authorities are doing an amazing job ensuring everyone knows exactly what to do, whether you’re at home, driving, or at the office. Following official guidance helps protect you, your colleagues, and the wider community.

So a quick recap on your moves when an alert comes through:

  • Stop working immediately
  • Stay calm, don’t panic
  • Move away from windows and glass
  • Head to the basement if possible
  • Use stairs, never elevators
  • Wait for the official all-clear before resuming activities

Staying alert, prepared, and calm can make all the difference in an emergency at work.
