Have you ever seen those videos about rising school fees in Dubai, or parents debating homeschooling? Kanessa Muluneh, an entrepreneur and mom, chose to homeschool her kids and she’s opening up about what the experience is really like.
One of the biggest myths is that homeschooled kids are isolated. Kanessa’s family built a flexible system: her kids split their week between home, a Learning Hub where they follow an online curriculum with other children, and activities. At home, they even have a dedicated classroom and a private teacher who comes in on certain days.
Forget the 5 am rush. The school day at home starts at 9 am. Lessons usually run for about three and a half focused hours, leaving the rest of the day free for projects, hobbies, and play. When it comes to curriculum, her children are enrolled in an online American program. It is deadline based rather than fixed schedules, which means they can study from anywhere in the world and still keep up.
Many assume homeschooling is cheaper, but that is not always true. Online schools and Learning Hub fees come to around AED 25000 per child, and families may spend more on private teachers. Some cut costs by sharing tutors with other families.
Switching from a traditional school setting was not easy. At first, Kanessa’s daughter missed the classroom environment. But over time, the family adjusted, finding more freedom and flexibility and discovering that homeschooling let them tailor learning to each child’s pace.
Kanessa’s biggest takeaway is not to overthink socialization. Kids still make friends through hubs, activities, and the community. What really matters, she says, is whether your child is happy, learning, and growing. If those boxes are ticked, then homeschooling can work.
Her experience shows homeschooling in Dubai is less about strict schedules and more about building a system that works for each family.
