Just when we thought we’re done with ‘number plate’ stories for this year…there’s one more.

Earlier this month, Emirates Auction and Abu Dhabi Police hosted an auction at Emirates Palace hotel to commemorate the Abu Dhabi Government’s Golden Jubilee. The auction generated…AED 99m.

Out of that whopping amount, a UAE national paid AED 31m for the ‘1’ number plate. Just so you know, it’s one of the limited-edition golden jubilee plates and it features the number 50 in the top left corner. 

That man has been arrested for issuing a bounced cheque…

The organisers filed a complaint that the 32-year-old had issued them a cheque but didn’t have enough money in his bank account. 7Days reported he has been detained while investigations are on. There are initial charges of fraud and issuing a bounced cheque.

The man has admitted to handing over a cheque knowing he didn’t have the funds

His plan was to sell the number plate at a profit so he could pay the value of the cheque, but little did he know that re-selling a number plate bought in an auction is only possible after the full amount has been paid. Before that a resale is illegal. 

He bought the number plate in honour of the country’s rulers

He said they ‘worked tirelessly to make the UAE no. 1 in the world’. He was willing to pay any amount to get the number plate.
