The Recent Natural Disasters Around The World Are A Reminder For Us To ACT Fast Before It Hits Home

Apocalyptic wildfires in Turkey, heatwaves in the Middle East, hail the size of tennis balls in Italy, snow in Brazil, deadly landslides in India, a rare tornado in the Czech Republic, floods in Germany and other parts of Europe, massive sandstorms in China, the 2nd largest river in South America, Paraná River, suffering from a drought… the list goes on and on. Earth is suffering as a result of damaging human activity and our efforts to reverse the damage are falling short.

Countless helpless animal and lower class people (who have no access to shelter) have lost their lives as a result of these natural disasters.

Bear in mind that this is only the beginning. It’s only going to get worst. The temperatures have been soaring every year since the late 19th century and it’s no shocker that 2020 was recorded to be the hottest year to date (…2020 was jinxed in all ways possible) but we only have ourselves to blame for the calamities.

Deforestation, an increase in agricultural and industrial activities, excess fishing and CO2 emissions have all contributed to causing irreversible damage to our planet

Our species has always been selfish, there’s nothing new about that. But even after seeing the chaos around us, if we can’t change our ways then do we have the right to complain?

“The death toll from all these events is rising fast and more and more people are being evacuated and displaced from their homes as sadly these are all consequences of the irresponsible way we treat our one and only planet…WE MUST CHANGE OUR WAYS BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!” – Timothy Sykes

As individuals… are we doing enough here in the UAE?

We are privileged to be living in a country that doesn’t experience tropical calamities such as, storms, hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones and etc. but residents in the UAE are no strangers to intense summer heatwaves and raging sandstorms.

These may be weather conditions that you can put up with whilst you take shelter inside air-conditioned skyscrapers and luxury shopping malls, however as temperatures rise, so will the mercury in thermometers.

If you’re in Dubai and want to get involved in bringing about a positive change to the environment, then visit Emirates Environment Group.

Let’s talk blame game.

As planet earth is crying out in pain, we are too busy blaming the system, our governments, leaders, companies and other external forces… we spend all that time blaming but never introspecting. There’s a famous saying, ‘charity begins at home’ and that very well applies to this as well.

All that time we spend blaming, hating, pointing fingers and waiting for change… could be channelled into ourselves and examining how we can be the change that we so desperately want to see in the world.

With the human population clock almost touching 8 BILLION people, we all have a personal duty to our home to start making more sustainable changes.

If not calamities will increase. Death tolls will rise. More families will get displaced. And the earth will die.

Don’t cry over social media posts but become proactive!

Remember, every drop makes an ocean.

There is still time to pull back from the brink of extinction and destruction. Lead a more sustainable life, start with simple changes such as:

  1. Switching out plastic with biodegradable alternatives
  2. Using reusable shopping bags
  3. Being mindful of your electricity consumption
  4. Reducing meat and fish intake – “If we decide to eat fewer meals with meat or dairy each week, we can have a huge impact on our collective health and the health of the planet.” (To learn more on this, click here)
  5. Planting trees
  6. Using reusable water bottles
  7. Use public transportation whenever possible
  8. Not litter (pretty basic eh! you’ll be surprised at how much this damages the environment)
  9. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
  10. Donate clothes instead of throwing them out
  11. Trade-in old electronics instead of throwing them out
  12. Be mindful of water consumption
  13. Be mindful of fuel consumption

These are basic changes each of us can attempt to make in order to secure a better tomorrow. If not that car you’re so protective of might just be hit by hail the size of tennis balls and you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.
