Saudi Arabia has suspended diplomatic relations with Canada following a tweet by Global Affairs Canada about the arrest of several women campaigning in Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi Press Agency made a statement on the matter, which was shared to the UAE’s national news agency WAM.
The statement reads: “It is a major, unacceptable affront to the Kingdom’s laws and judicial process, as well as a violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty. Throughout its long history, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has never accepted any interference in its domestic affairs by, or orders from, any country.”
#Statement | We consider the Canadian ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia persona non grata and order him to leave within the next 24 hours.

Stating that it considers “the Canadian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia as Persona-Non-Grata.”
Canada is gravely concerned about additional arrests of civil society and women’s rights activists in #SaudiArabia, including Samar Badawi. We urge the Saudi authorities to immediately release them and all other peaceful #humanrights activists.
