The sale of electronic cigarettes will be permitted in the UAE, following new regulations introduced on Sunday.
The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology confirmed that e-cigarettes, handheld electronic devices that simulate the experience of smoking a cigarette, now have permission to be sold, providing safety standards are met and the devices carry the necessary health warnings, according to the National.
The use and spread of unregulated smoking paraphernalia prompted the new regulations, according to the report.
Smoking e-cigarettes is commonly known as vaping, and the devices were originally used to combat addiction to cigarettes, however, some regions have reported a rise in teenagers using e-cigarettes due to some appealing flavours.
A report from the British Heart Foundation states vaping is not harm free, the vapour includes ‘possible carcinogens and irritants, though at a much lower level than in conventional cigarettes’.
