What’s Causing The Loud Booms Heard Across The UAE?

If you’ve been wondering about the loud booms echoing across the UAE recently, you don’t need to worry because they’re not as close as you may think. Yes, they are sounds of explosions (technically), but it’s missiles being intercepted. From February 28, 2026, UAE residents were hearing loud explosion sounds across the country.

It started here…

Now, here’s what’s causing the sound to be heard all throughout the country

According to The National, the sounds were caused by the UAE’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, an advanced missile defence setup designed to intercept threats high above the ground. The UAE’s THAAD system detects and intercepts incoming missiles more than 100km above the country.

The loud booms people are hearing aren’t explosions on the ground; they are sonic booms, created by the interceptors travelling at extremely high speeds! This is why the sound could be heard across multiple areas.

In short: the booms are a sign the system is doing its job, not a cause for alarm.

As we continue to hear missile interceptions and jets flying over the city, make sure you follow the Ministry of Interior’s guidelines for safety

  1. Make sure to rely and adhere ONLY on official instructions and information from government sources.
  2. Try to remain indoors and away from open spaces
  3. Avoid stockpiling
  4. Do not photograph, share or approach missile debris
  5. Do not engage in fearmongering and sharing false news

This will not last for much longer. Note that there are free mental health support systems in place to help you!
