If you’ve been wondering about the loud booms echoing across the UAE recently, you don’t need to worry because they’re not as close as you may think. According to The National, the sounds were caused by the UAE’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, an advanced missile defence setup designed to intercept threats high above the ground. The UAE’s THAAD system detects and intercepts incoming missiles more than 100km above the country.
The loud booms people are hearing aren’t explosions on the ground; they are sonic booms, created by the interceptors travelling at extremely high speeds! This is why the sound could be heard across multiple areas.
In short: the booms are a sign the system is doing its job, not a cause for alarm.
