Free healthcare is not provided to expats in the UAE and so health insurance, by law, is supplied by employers and sponsors.
Because of this many expats are uninformed when it comes to knowing exactly what healthcare they are entitled to.
Most employers opt for a basic coverage plan, leaving many individuals to pay huge bills if a medical issue arises which is not covered in their insurance plan.
As a result more and more expats in the UAE are investing in private health insurance.
As well as offering peace of mind when it comes to your most valuable possession, your health, private health insurance will save you money in the long term as you avoid hefty medical bills.
In one survey it was revealed that a measly 17% of people had dental care included in their employer’s insurance.
So for the other 83% that’s some hefty bills coming your way even if all you need is a check up.
The majority of the UAE’s population is comprised of expats.
And expats travel.
So what happens if something happens while you are outside of the UAE?
If you are partial to a holiday, or multiple, you should opt for a health insurance plan that allows you the freedom of crossing borders without the burden of huge medical bills should you happen to fall ill.
Does your employer provide adequate health insurance for your family and those dependent on you?
You may be covered but are they, and to what extent?
If your spouse or child falls ill, alleviating the financial pressure can be a huge relief in a time of stress and worry.
Do you suffer from a pre-existing medical condition?
Will this be covered under your employer’s insurance?
Many basic coverage plans may fail to insure you against the cost of treatment for a pre-existing medical issue you might suffer from.
In the unfortunate event that you should need medical help which is not available here in the UAE, how will you access it?
Sometimes treatments are not available here and in this case many have to go abroad to seek suitable care.
If this was to happen to you, how will you afford it?
Private health insurance does not have to be a financial burden.
Most insurers offer many different packages and options to suit all budgets and individuals.
And at the end of the day, can you really put a price on your health?
