Wake Up To Ramadan And Have Some Respect

Avatar

It’s my sixth Ramadan in this country, and every year, it appears the city gets a little more relaxed – a few people have said to me this year ‘it doesn’t even feel like Ramadan this year’. It’s perhaps due to the laws loosening on venues being open, and the general attitude of the city.

This weekend was the first of Ramadan, and out and about I saw some interesting things.

People consuming coffees and waters in public, people dressing in shorts, singlets and small dresses.

And then I saw this tweet

People are either unaware, or uncaring about it

I don’t know if it’s tourists or it’s new residents, but people need to wake up.

I’m a westerner, and I’m sure I’ve committed my share of faux pas, but it’s pretty straight forward – have a bit of respect for those fasting.

All you have to do, is cover your knees and shoulders in public, and don’t eat or drink.

  • You can eat and drink at more places than EVER, that are shielded from those fasting
  • You can wear what you want in the privacy of your own home
  • You can pretty much wear what you like the other 11 months of the year (within reason) and eat and drink in public in the daylight hours

But for this month, make a bit of effort, and cover up, and don’t eat or drink in public, for goodness’ sake.

It’s a lovely month to experience, if you do it right.

Ramadan Kareem.
