A 9-year-old girl, suffering from a complex heart issue, has been given a chance at a better life after doctors at a Dubai hospital performed a tricky surgery successfully.

Louise Cindy was admitted to Burjeel Hospital after her mother noticed she was struggling to breath when she had to walk for a long time. Playing with her friends and climbing stairs were difficult for the child.

Louise’s heart would palpitate and beat really fast, so her mother turned to the hospital to seek medical help.

Louise was diagnosed with a triple congenital cleft of the mitral valve, which caused a huge leak in her heart. Her surgeon, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Walid Shaker, Consultant and Head of Cardiac Surgery Department, said the condition could lead to heart failure if left untreated.

The leak meant any strenuous activities would cause her heart to palpitate and prevent her living a normal life, according to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Walid.

The doctor was faced with two choices; either replacing the leaking valve with a small-sized mechanical valve, a process relatively less complex but would affect the child’s growth later on because the artificial valve would not match her growing heart, or choose to repair the leaking valve, a more demanding and technically more complicated medical treatment. The doctor chose the second option, which if successful would mean Louise would not face complications pertaining to the heart in her growth as an adult… although she may need a valve replacement by the age of 25.

An expert team of cardiac specialists under Assoc. Prof. Dr. Walid’s supervision performed the 4-hour complex surgery, repairing the congenital mitral cleft and correcting the massive valve leak.

The operation was a success, Louise’s mother expressed gratitude to the doctors at Burjeel Hosptial for giving her daughter a second chance at life.
