IBCC - IB Equivalence

The Inter-Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) authorized equivalency of International Baccalaureate (IB) grades to the grading scheme of the Pakistani education board for the May 2021 examination on Thursday.

The IBCC Equivalency Committee examined the IB equivalence grading system. They determined that students receiving a 7 in the IB Diploma in 2021 should get comparable marks from the Pakistani Board of Education.

The students will receive up to 96 points from the IBCC. In IBCC equivalency certificates, students who completed their O/A level with A* grades received only 90 points, but those who obtained their Secondary School Certificate (matriculation) and intermediate received over 95 points.

IBCC have reviewed the situation and confirmed the MUCH NEEDED amendments to the previous policy

The 167th meeting of the Equivalence Committee of the IBCC was conducted in Karachi on August 30, 2021, under Dr. Shaukat Hayat.

“Yes, we have decided to award the student with A* more than 90 marks based on our new formula of mean value, which we are preparing. I guess, A* student will be able to get up to 96 marks,” said Secretary IBCC Dr. Ghulam Ali Mallah.

The members of IBCC have reviewed the matter and decided to amend the previous policy. The board has eased the rigidity of the grading system. Now students securing grade 7, highest grade in the IB, will be given equivalence to the students securing 90 percent and above of Pakistani Examination Board.

How and which students are benefited?

It’s worth noting that the equivalency for grades 1 through 6 will not change. For one year only, IB Middle Year Programme (MYP) students who took the May 2021 test will be excused from Pakistan Studies, Islamiat, and Urdu.

Uzma Shujjat, IB Regional Manager, says that this extremely timely decision will surely benefit students during the COVID-19 pandemic. These revisions are going to help IB students in entering medical and professional universities, as a result reducing the pandemic’s impact.
