Public Outrage Grows As PTA Confirms Internet Issues Until October

Rohama Batool

The internet in Pakistan is on life support, and it looks like we’re in for a long haul.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has just confirmed that the ongoing internet disruptions are set to last until October

Yes, you heard that right—another month of painfully slow connections, endless buffering, and overall digital frustration.

The culprit? Faulty submarine cables.

According to the PTA, two of the seven international cables that keep Pakistan connected to the rest of the digital world have malfunctioned

While one of the cables, AAE-1, has been repaired, the other, SMW-4, won’t be fully operational until early October. That means we’re stuck with subpar internet for weeks to come.

But hold on, there’s more to the story. While the PTA points fingers at these underwater cables, critics have a different theory.

They believe the government is using this opportunity to test a new internet firewall designed to control social media content. There’s speculation that this firewall, which is equipped with filters to block certain content, could be slowing down our internet experience even further.

It doesn’t help that PTA Chairman Maj Gen (retd) Hafeezur Rehman recently admitted that an upgrade to the National Firewall System (NFS) is indeed underway

This upgrade, approved way back in March 2019, is supposedly aimed at regulating or removing content from social media platforms based on directives from the government or courts. And let’s not forget that social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was banned recently for not playing by the rules.

And as you can imagine, people are NOT happy.

The prolonged internet issues have sparked outrage across the country!

From freelancers trying to meet deadlines to students struggling to attend online classes, everyone is feeling the pinch. Social media is ablaze with angry rants, memes, and outright frustration.

So, what can we do besides wait? The PTA assures us that repairs are ongoing, and things should return to normal by October. Until then, it looks like we’re in for a bumpy ride on the information superhighway…
