Shan Masood returns to Multan Sultans as vice-captain

Shan Masood

In a move that has delighted fans in South Punjab, Pakistan’s Test captain Shan Masood has officially rejoined Multan Sultans as vice-captain for the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League. The franchise confirmed the news on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, through a social media announcement captioned: “Your vice-captain – Shan Masood. Back where he belongs.” The veteran opener previously led the Sultans during the 2020 season, guiding them to the top of the table before their maiden title win the following year under Mohammad Rizwan.

A New Leadership Duo for the 2026 Season

Masood’s return comes during a period of significant change for the franchise. He will serve as the deputy to the newly appointed captain, Australian T20 specialist Ashton Turner. Turner, a five-time Big Bash League (BBL) champion with the Perth Scorchers, was named skipper on March 16. The leadership shift followed the departure of Mohammad Rizwan, who moved to the newly formed franchise Pindiz earlier this month after a highly successful stint that saw the Sultans reach three consecutive finals.

Shan Masood’s experience is expected to provide critical stability to a squad that has seen a complete overhaul following the franchise’s recent rebranding and strategic takeover by CD Ventures.

A Reinvigorated Squad for a New Era

The Sultans’ roster for PSL 11 features a powerful blend of international experience and local talent. Alongside Shan Masood and Turner, the team includes Australian legend Steve Smith, South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, and the recently crowned ICC Player of the Month, Sahibzada Farhan. The bowling attack has also been bolstered by veteran Peter Siddle and emerging left-arm pacer Salman Mirza.

Countdown to the Opening Clash

With the 11th edition of the PSL set to commence on March 26, 2026, the Sultans are preparing for a high-intensity campaign. The tournament will feature an expanded eight-team format, with matches scheduled across multiple venues in Pakistan. As the “New Sultans” look to reclaim the title they last won in 2021, the pairing of Turner’s tactical aggression and Shan Masood’s local leadership is being viewed as a winning combination for the road ahead.
