Usman Khawaja joins RawalPindiz as marquee replacement for PSL 11 debut

Usman Khawaja

In a major last-minute boost to their inaugural campaign, RawalPindiz have announced the signing of veteran Australian opener Usman Khawaja for the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League. The experienced left-hander joins the squad as a direct replacement for England’s Laurie Evans, who has withdrawn from the tournament.

A Homecoming for the Veteran Opener

Usman Khawaja, who recently retired from international cricket, brings a wealth of top-tier experience to the newly formed franchise. This stint marks his second appearance in the PSL; he previously represented Islamabad United during the 2021 season, where he left a lasting impression with a dominant average of 49.20 and a strike rate exceeding 150.

The Islamabad-born batter’s arrival is seen as a strategic move by the “Pindiz” management to stabilize their top order. With over 120 T20 appearances across global leagues like the BBL, IPL, and Vitality Blast, Khawaja is expected to lead from the front alongside captain Mohammad Rizwan.

Bolstering the “Pindiz” Ranks

The RawalPindiz franchise welcomed the Australian star via social media, stating:

“@Uz_Khawaja joins The Pindiz! A world-class batter with top-level experience comes in as the replacement for Laurie Evans. Welcome to Pindi, Uzzie.”

Usman Khawaja’s career statistics reflect his pedigree across all formats. In the T20 arena, he has amassed 3,400 runs, while his international resume boasts over 6,200 Test runs and 16 centuries. His inclusion adds significant “star power” to a team that already features big names like Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, and Daryl Mitchell.

Strategic Shifts for PSL 11

The signing comes just as the league prepares for a historic season featuring eight teams for the first time. However, the tournament has faced logistical adjustments due to nationwide austerity measures. As confirmed by the PCB, matches will now be held behind closed doors at just two venues—Karachi and Lahore—to minimize travel and resource consumption.

RawalPindiz are set to kick off their debut season this Saturday in Lahore, where they will face off against Peshawar Zalmi. With Usman Khawaja now in the mix, the league newcomers look ready to challenge the established giants of the competition.
