Traveling between the Holy Cities has never been easier.

Termed as the biggest electric train project in the Middle East, the Haramain Railway was officially inaugurated by King Salman on Tuesday in Jeddah.

According to Arab News, the inauguration ceremony saw the Minister of transport, Dr. Nabil Al-Amoudi, present a picture to King Salman in which King Abdul Aziz is seen with King Saud at the launch of the East Train project in 1951.

The Haramain Railway runs through the cities of Makkah, Makkah, Jeddah and the King Abdullah Economic City and cost over $16 billion to build.

The high-speed train system is expected to slash down the five hours Makkah to Madinah journey to less than half at just two hours.

The trains have a capacity to transport over 60 million passengers annually with each train capable of transporting 417 passengers at a time. The Haramain Railway is expected to play a pivotal role in the 2019 Hajj and Ramadan seasons.

But this isn’t Saudi Arabia’s only major transportation project, soon Riyadh will get its own metro system that has an estimated cost of around $22.5 billion.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, King Salman rode on the train to Madinah.
