A HUGE Treasure Trove Of 25,000 Artefacts Has Been Unearthed In Jeddah

You see, the historic heart of Jeddah is undergoing a major restoration and development drive called the Historic Jeddah Revival Project. Now, thanks to it, the Jeddah Historic District Programme (JHDP) just made a mega discovery in Saudi Arabia: over 25,000 artefact fragments from way back in the early Islamic days, like around the 7th to 8th centuries AD.

Partnering up with the Saudi Heritage Commission, they dug deep into the Jeddah Historic Area and hit the jackpot. Imagine unearthing pieces from the time of the early Islamic caliphates—it’s like finding buried treasure!

These have apparently been discovered for a while, but it’s only now that the formal announcement is being made.

The finds include things like pottery shards, animal bones, and building materials weighing a whopping 531 kg! They’re like an amazing insight into the early days of Jeddah.

Now, let’s talk about the highlights. During the dig at the Othman bin Affan Mosque, they stumbled upon ebony pillars straight outta Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). And the surprises don’t stop there. Porcelain and pottery bits from as far as China’s Jiangxi province, dating back to the 16th to 19th centuries AD, made an appearance too.

But wait, there’s more. Tombstones with inscriptions possibly from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AH were scattered around the area, which were basically lost under the city! Yikes!
