Karachi has become the latest hotspot for an unexpected aquatic visitor. Experts have confirmed the presence of the Amazon sailfin catfish in Karachi waters, sparking concern among environmentalists and fisheries specialists. Native to Latin America, this armoured fish has now established itself in Pakistan, raising alarms about its impact on local aquatic ecosystems.
On January 4, 2026, officials at Karachi Fish Harbour identified an unusual fish brought in from a shallow pond near Sukkur. Experts later confirmed it as the Amazon sailfin catfish. The species stands out due to its thick, bony armour and distinctive appearance. Although popular worldwide as an aquarium fish, it is also known as a highly invasive species.
Experts believe the Amazon sailfin catfish likely entered Pakistan’s water bodies through accidental releases from aquariums or fish farms. Over time, it spread rapidly across Sindh and even reached parts of lower Punjab. Initially labelled an “alien species” due to confusion over its identity, the fish has now spread so widely that controlling its population is no longer considered practical.

Environmental experts warn that the Amazon sailfin catfish in Karachi poses a serious threat to native fish. Its aggressive survival traits allow it to outcompete local species for food and habitat. According to WWF Pakistan, invasive fish disrupt aquatic biodiversity and weaken natural ecosystems, often causing long-term damage that is difficult to reverse.

The arrival of the Amazon sailfin catfish adds to a long list of invasive species in Pakistan. Since 1928, at least 26 non-native fish have been introduced, including trout, tilapia, carp, and grass carp. While many were brought in to boost aquaculture, experts now say the environmental risks were underestimated. These species have permanently altered aquatic ecosystems across the country.
