Dog Bite Cases in Karachi Rise Sharply in 2025

Karachi’s streets have been busier than ever in 2025, but not in a way anyone hoped for. With 29,000 dog bite cases and 19 rabies-related deaths reported so far, the city’s residents are finding themselves dodging more than just traffic jams.

Hospitals faced a canine crisis

Indus Hospital and Jinnah Hospital have been overwhelmed treating bite victims. Indus Hospital reports over 16,000 cases and eight deaths, while Jinnah Hospital saw nearly 13,000 cases and 11 deaths. Doctors link the surge to the city’s growing stray dog population, especially in areas like Landhi, Korangi, DHA, Mehmoodabad, Orangi Town, and Malir. Overflowing garbage dumps have become gathering spots for stray dogs, increasing human encounters.

Residents tried to outsmart the strays

Locals have tried everything from relocating dogs to demanding shelter homes, but the furry residents keep coming back—thanks in part to well-meaning neighbors who feed them. Parents now play superhero, chasing away dogs as kids dash for safety. Evening strolls and bike rides have turned into obstacle courses, with dogs chasing after anyone on two wheels or two feet.

Doctors shared rabies prevention tips

Dr Muhammad Aftab Gohar from Indus Hospital reminded everyone that the first thing to do after a bite is to wash the wound with soap and water for at least ten minutes. The WHO says this simple step can be a lifesaver. But many still rely on old-school remedies or incomplete treatments, which can be risky. Once rabies symptoms show up—think headaches, anxiety, and a fear of water or air—there’s no turning back. The only way to stay safe? Get the anti-rabies vaccine on time and keep those garbage dumps in check!
