The United Kingdom’s longest-reigning Queen has passed away. The announcement of her death comes hours after reports of her ill health. Reports reveal that she passed away in her sleep in her ancestral home in Balmoral, Scotland. She was 96-years-old. The Buckingham Palace shared: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.” All members of her family are currently present at Balmoral, Scotland.

Queen Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952 after her father’s passing. On her demise, her son, Charles has taken on the throne as the King. Soon after the announcement of her passing, he released a statement: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

The Queen was born as Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926. In 1947, she married the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, who passed away last year at the age of 99. The couple had four children together, King Charles, Prince Edward, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne. At the age of 25, she stepped into the role of the Queen.

With her son now as King Charles, Prince William becomes the next heir to the throne, followed by his children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
