Cholera Outbreak in Sudan Intensifies as Cases Surge Past 5,000

Avatar

Sudan’s cholera crisis is rapidly worsening, with over 5,000 confirmed cases and 176 deaths, as of early September. Heavy rains and flooding have led to the spread of the disease, particularly affecting the states of Gedaref and Kassala.

The Ministry of Health has reported widespread infection, with Gedaref facing the most critical shortages of medical supplies, IV fluids, and proper sanitation. Local health authorities and international organizations are urgently calling for aid, as flood-damaged roads make access to critical areas nearly impossible.

Swift intervention is needed

In Gedaref, health officials are appealing for swift interventions, and hospitals, such as Al Faw Hospital, are becoming overwhelmed with patients. Medical sources have highlighted the deteriorating conditions, including shortages of disease control measures and the need for isolation centers.

Doctors Without Borders is expected to assist with these efforts.

This crisis started began in August

The ongoing cholera outbreak began in August, exacerbated by flooding in 11 states that has impacted over 195,000 people. The floods have destroyed more than 26,000 homes, contributing to a dire humanitarian crisis. While the international community has responded, the scale of the disaster demands more immediate and coordinated relief to curb the disease’s spread.

This powerful display of resilience not only showcases their strength, but also the community’s ability to keep adapting in the face of climate change. #lovinkhartoum #lovinsudan #khartoum #sudan #sudanese #sudanconflict ♬ original sound – Lovin Khartoum
